Nestled behind the provincial courts in Woodside, a motorcycle shop called Moto Italia has opened at 11 Acadia St.

The Italian name comes from their speciality, the first Canadian dealer for Italian motorcycle manufacturer SWM, headquartered in Milan.

The shop owner Bill Scott has a history of motorcycles in his lineage. His great-grandfather William Scott, a blacksmith by trade, was the first to bring a motorcycle to Saint John, N.B. in 1905 — after he grew weary of his daily 10-minute walk. That motorcycle lead William Scott into metalwork, repairing motorcycles, cars and carriages.

Scott’s father, Harry, also had a relationship with motorcycles. He serving in the Second World War as motorcycle mechanic and dispatch rider.

Bill Scott started riding in the 1960s for sport and inexpensive transportation. Now 50 years after he started riding he has brought his love of motorcycles to a business and has partnered with SWM.

“I’ve enjoyed motorcycles since I was a kid and driven every brand out there, but I knew as soon as I drove an SWM while in Europe, that they were superior in performance, and in quality as well as being beautiful bikes,” says Scott. “I knew I wanted to introduce the brand to Atlantic Canada with a dealer that is primarily web based, offering personal customer service, and delivers these high quality bikes at competitive prices.”

Moto Italia carries a range of motorcycles from off-road enduro, dual-purpose classics, and adventure bikes. The prices range from $6,300 and go up to $12,700 with 10 models in between. The dealship also carries accessories and SWM branded clothing.

For now, the showroom is open seven days a week but by appointment (902-880-6731).
