With more than 25 years experience in the kitchen, chef and owner Semih Dursun has finally made the leap to owning his own restaurant.
His Turkish restaurant, Turkuaz, has opened its doors at 827 Bedford Highway — more than 80 seats, and there’s a view of the Bedford Basin.
Turkuaz is a Turkish word for a specific shade of blue often associated with turquoise.
The eatery serves a variety of hot and cold appetizers that one would expect from a Turkish restaurant, as well as a full complement of kebabs, with chicken, lamb, seafood, vegetarian and vegan options served with coban salad and rice. Lunch options also include wraps burgers — lamb or chicken.
One of the dishes that Dursun is most proud to bring to Halifax is kunefe, which has a lot of the elements of baklava. It is a layer of unsalted cheese served warm between two layers of crispy pastry and accented with walnuts and a sugar syrup.
The family describes their restaurant goals as: “Everyone that walks into the restaurant is like family to us and we take care of family. Our number one goal is to make you guys leave with a huge smile on your faces.”
Turkuaz is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. (noon on Sundays) to 10 p.m. with free parking both outdoors and underground. It also offers catering, takeout and delivery within five kilometres of the restaurant.
